The Grand Canyon is hands down one of the world's greatest and most majestic natural wonders. It is a symbol of the southwest and instantly recognizable. The Grand Canyon is 217 miles long (349 km), about 4 to 18 miles (6 to 29 km) wide and over 5,000 ft (1,500 m) deep. It was formed by the Colorado River over a lengthy period of six million years. The fast-flowing waters of the Colorado River tore their way through the Colorado Plateau and the Four Corners region. The Canyon is home to ringed rocks of various colors, vast cliffs, limestone, sandstone and shale. The Grand Canyon is a spectacular spectacle to behold. No matter what time of day you visit the Grand Canyon you will find the beauty, scenery, nature and colors to be almost overwhelming.
The Grand Canyon National Park is about 1,904 sq miles (4.930 sq km). It is home to the Grand Canyon itself. Spend at least a day in the Park because there is a lot to see. There are plenty of walking trails in the park so wear comfortable shoes and clothing that is appropriate to the season.
The South Rim gets most of the Grand Canyon's visitors because unlike the North Rim it is open year-round and easily accessible from the highway.
Grand Canyon Village was built in the 19th century to accommodate visitors. In 1905 El Tovar Hotel was opened as well as Hopi House. Today Grand Canyon Village has a wide range of hotels, restaurants and stores. But be careful when visiting the Grand Canyon Village it can be easy to get lose here. The buildings are very spread out and usually surrounded by woods.
There are two scenic drives that start from Grand Canyon Village: Hermit Road and Desert View Drive. Hermit drive is closed to private vehicles from March to November every year, but Desert View Drive is open year round.
Hermit Road is about 8 miles (13 km) long. Trailview Overlook is the first viewpoint, followed by Maricopa Point, Hopi Point and finally ending at Hermits Rest complete with a gift shop.
Desert View Drive is longer and is about 26 miles (42 km) long. Along the drive you will see Grandview Point, Tusayan Ruin and Desert View.
The Bright Angel Trail is definitely the most popular hiking trail in The Grand Canyon. It starts at Grand Canyon Village. It travels down the side of the canyon, crosses the river by suspension bridge and ends around Phantom Ranch. This can be a very lengthy and tiring trip so don't attempt it in one day and bring lots of water.
Try a mule ride through the canyon if you're looking for a really great adventure.

Thank you for posting your Hub, Chelsea, it is quite informative for me as I am planning to travel in that direction from here--Greeley, Colorado. I really don't think I'll try to walk the trail in your photo, however. Can you please tell me what the best month for blooming flowers is? Myron
